Gold Coast sets Australia's first-ever koala levy to buy bushland

Gold Coast City Council has become the first council in Australia to set a “koala levy” for households to buy koala habitats.
Gold Coast households will pay $3 a week — less than a cup of coffee — for a new koala levy, in one of the boldest moves to protect koalas announced in Queensland in a decade.
The $3 per week koala levy will help raise $10.85 million in the first 12 months.
“We are looking at ways to improve habitat coverage and condition, decrease koala injuries and fatalities caused by domestic and pest animals, and manage threats from traffic and bushfire,” Cr Tate said.
“These are priority actions within the City’s Koala Conservation Plan,” he said.
The Gold Coast City Council brings down its 2018-19 budget on June 21.
